WARNING / DANGER - Safety Information About Paddling on Mono Lake

Safety Information About Paddling a Kayak, Canoe, or SUP on Mono Lake.

WARNING / DANGER

Very dangerous conditions can occur on Mono Lake.  The biggest danger is the wind.

The wind can blow very hard and sometimes blows offshore (away from the shore).  This can make it difficult or impossible to get back to shore.

Whitecaps can form and conditions can get rough.

Dangerous high winds pick up most afternoons.  Sometimes the wind picks up before noon.   It is best to paddle in the early morning.

Paddlers can be caught unaware by the wind - they paddle away from shore with the wind and can not paddle back into the wind.

The danger for inflatable kayaks, canoes, boats, and SUPs is even greater.

Be sure to carry lots of extra water and be prepared to spend the night away from the launch site or on an island.

Check the weather forecast before paddling (pay close attention to the wind forecast).

Cell phones don't work from many places on Mono Lake.

Rescuers won't be able to rescue you if the wind is blowing hard so you will have to wait for the wind to die down and then paddle back.  Normally the wind dies down some time at night or in the early morning.
